The brazen attack occurred at around 17:00 hrs.

Police confirmed last night that the stolen canister contained three night-deposit bags that had been uplifted from Guyana Stockfeeds Limited in Ruimveldt; Mines Services Limited at Providence, East Bank Demerara, and SOL Inc. (formerly Shell Antilles Ltd.) at Agricola.

According to reports, the security personnel were heading to the city in the GEB van, after uplifting the last payroll near Agricola, when a horse cart suddenly blocked their path.

Four cars then encircled the van and about eight men, who were brandishing handguns, exited the vehicles.

The men then ordered the guards to hand over their firearms and the money canister.

The guards immediately complied, and the gunmen quickly re-entered their vehicles and raced away in the direction of the city.

The victims drove to the East Ruimveldt Police Station, where they reported the robbery.

Kaieteur News understands that police have the licence number of one of the getaway cars.

Heavily-armed police ranks subsequently scoured sections of Sophia after receiving reports that the bandits had headed into the area.

However, no trace of the gunmen was found.

Kaieteur News was unable to reach officials from the GEB or from the three companies that suffered losses in the attack.

The heist revived memories of the robberies and brutal execution-style killings that occurred in Agricola and neighbouring villages during the height of the crime wave.
